broken song (a poem)

broken song
by Sheridan O’Donnell

life is a jealous mouth
waiting to lie
a lonely lover
turned away
a pointless poem
that does not rhyme
an empty room
filled with pain
a cruel and stupid king
wielding chance
who shot me down
and killed my name
then in its guts
where light was lost
my soul cried “end!”
and so it was

and so it was
but not for long
for far away
a broken song
composed by Love
but sung by you
to bless my ears
and help me through
to pick me up
and gift me grace
to crack the night
and wash my face
to end below
with up above
to speak my name
to teach me Love
